Operations are the foundation and the heart and soul of any business. When set up correctly, operations keep the business running smoothly and allow the owner to focus on strategies and finances, instead of the day-to-day. A solid operational plan creates consistency in the business, and this allows ordinary people to create extraordinary results.

Think about any successful company that has multiple locations, like Starbucks. Walk into any Starbucks across the country or around the world, and you will have the same experience from store to store. Your coffee is the same, the names of products are the same, the furniture is the same, the retail items are the same, and the motif is the same. The only thing that may be different is pricing and the employees’ faces. I travel a lot for business and often travel alone. The first thing I do when I get to a new town or country is find the local Starbucks. Why? First, I like the coffee, and second, it feels familiar—like home.

Though you may not open several businesses, you need to set your business up as if you were planning to franchise it. The more systematic you are in your approach to operations, the easier it is to train your employees and replicate the experience. Like Starbucks, you want to provide the familiar experience that keeps customers or clients coming back for more.
